Presidents Message March 2024

This month marks four years as your club President. I’ve been having a great time running the club and going to all the Fish A Longs. This year, steelhead fishing is much better than last year and a few of us are already on the board. It’s also a great month to chase Bull Trout, something I’ve wanted to try but neglected over the years.

We’ll have a regular meeting Tuesday, March 19th. I’ll be talking about our upcoming 2024 Fish A Longs along with “the how and the why” of how we choose our fishing locations plus the art & science of how to choose good fishing locations in general.

March signals the beginning of spring and many local fisheries begin to wake up and turn on. Trout in our local lakes will begin to get active as water temperatures rise from the low 40’s to the high 40’s. The Deschutes will have good fishing if water levels are stable & warming. Last but not least, March is the best month for trophy steelhead so keep flinging flies with your spey rod. If anyone wants to get out and chase some steelhead this month I’m an easy mark.

Our March 23rd Fish A Long is up in the air as we have higher than normal water on our usual March locations of the Crooked or Deschutes Rivers. If this high water persists we’ll hit an Oregon Fishing Club lake for trout.

For several years now we have been posting monthly fishing reports. Looking back on them is a fun way to get ideas for local fly-fishing opportunities currently happening or coming up. Type “March” or “April” and you’ll get all the past reports for that month.

Please remember our sponsors this, they are the lifeblood of the club. Stop by their shops and let them know your appreciate their support. Better yet buy something or book a trip. Good fishing!

February 2024 Fish A Long Report

The best word to describe this months Fish A Long was WINDY! It was very windy…and COLD! However, we all kind of knew that would happen so we planned for a good meal in a warm cabin. Most of us opted to stay inside, talk fishing and eat really good smoked pork Taco’s courtesy of Rich and his portable Traeger Ranger. Good times were had by all. Thanks to everyone that came and made it a fun day, in spite of the cold & windy weather!

CFF January 2024 Fishing Reports

The crazy weather last month put a damper on our fishing efforts but a few of us managed to get out and make some good things happen. Pictures are first with the report below.

From Darryl Huff: Got my 1st steelhead on the swung fly January 4th on the Sandy. Went back out the next day got a Wild steelhead on the swing. Had the drag a bit too loose on this one. It went airborne immediately with line coming off the reel too fast. Got out one more time on the 8th before the Sandy blew out & caught one of my top 10 best fighting hatchery steelhead. It had a left max clip and weighed 14.2 pounds.

From Chris Brehm: Spent several days chasing winter Steelhead. Got one little hatchery fish on the Sandy. Released some chrome natives on the Wilson. Stopped by Pyramid Lake NV on a road trip with my wife. No luck for me but I saw some nice fish landed. Hope to get back there soon.

Thanks to everyone for sending in their reports!

Presidents Message February 2024

Now that January’s ice has melted it’s time to get out there and try to catch a steelhead. The warmer weather & rain will both pull in fish and make them more active.

One of the consolations during these slow years is most of the fish you do see caught are bigger than average, so when you do get out there beef up those tippets with at least 12lb Maxima or 15 Fluorocarbon. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard sad stories of big steelhead lost to light tippets.

January’s snow & ice storms forced us to cancel last months “steelhead school” so we will have it this month on Saturday, February 17th.

This months speaker will be Lane Hoffman. He’ll be talking about all the little things you can do to care for and maintain your fly fishing tackle to keep it performing at the highest level. It’s a really good subject and we hope to see you at the February 20th meeting.

For several years now we have been posting monthly fishing reports. Looking back on them is a good way to get ideas for local fly fishing opportunities currently happening or coming up. I’ve tested it out; type the word February or March in the search box and you’ll get all the past reports for that month.

CFF December 2023 Reports

Hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays and was able to get out and do some fishing. The big news was Ed and Lane’s trip to Venice…Louisiana! Pictures first with the reports below.

From Lane Hoffman: Did well on some big Lousianna Redfish with Ed, Tom & Ken.

From Wayne Hughes: Fished Hagg lake and found some fat hold over rainbows willing to take some leach patterns fished on a type 3 full sinking line.

Spent a couple of days with the reintroduction of Chum salmon group at the Big Creek Hatchery. We helped relocate about 190 adult Chum salmon back into streams that historically had Chum runs in the past. This program might have some implications on some Willamette river tributaries.

From Darryl Huff: got a nice steelhead on the Sandy in late December. The steelhead run on the Sandy is late this year. The left max clip on this fish indicates that either the sperm or the egg came from a wild fish.

From Rich Harvey: hit Blue Den Lake for some big trout. Cool/cold weather slowed down the fishing but grinding it out with white streamers paid off.

From Dave Kilhefner: Rich & I hit Big Tree Lake for some afternoon trout fishing for our last trip of 2023. The cold water had the fish moving slow but we managed a few each. Afterwards we got some good food and a cold one at the Clarkes General Store.

Thanks to everyone for sending in your reports!

January 2024 Presidents Message

Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to enjoy holiday festivities and quality family time.

I’m looking forward to the New Year and have a couple “fishing resolutions” to share. First is to go on 4-5 cool fishing trips and I already have a couple on the calendar. Next is to continue to improve our Fish A Longs calendar. Fishing opportunities have changed over the past several years and it’s important to change with them.

Our January 16th meeting will feature a run down of our planned Fish A Longs for the coming year. While we have a schedule, it’s not set in stone so if you have any ideas email them to me so we can discuss them at the next meeting.

Our January 20th Fish A Long will be at my place on the Sandy River for a “steelhead school” with some hands on instruction on Spey Casting plus swung fly and nymph fishing presentations. In the past we’ve had this Fish A Long at Oxbow park but it gets pretty dang cold, so we’re having it at my place so we can warm up by the woodstove if the fishing is slow, and lets face it Winter Steelhead fly fishing is always slow!

As I’m typing this the water conditions are good but the steelhead are scarce. Still, a few fish are being caught and since nobody can cast far enough to get one from the couch you gotta get out there and pound the water!

For several years now we have been posting monthly fishing reports. Looking back on them is a good way to get ideas for local fly fishing opportunities currently happening or coming up. Type the word January or February in the search box and you’ll get all the past reports for that month.

It’s time to think about paying your 2024 membership fee if you haven’t already. However if you joined as a new member in 2023 it will be good for 2024 too; we are on the honor system so please let me know. Here is the membership link plus I will be sending membership notices out to everyone. If you participate in the club I will guarantee you’ll get a solid value for the $35 you pay to be a member.

January is a great month to get good deals after Christmas so get out to your local fly shop buy all the stuff that Santa forgot. Please remember our sponsors, they are the lifeblood of the club. Stop by their shops and let them know your appreciate their support. Better yet buy something or book a trip.

CFF November Fishing Reports

November is often a sleeper month that can produce some very good fishing when the weather cooperates. For the most part it did. Pictures are first with the reports below.

From Greg Obrien: Went to the Delta with my brother in early November. He did great on stripers up to about 10 lbs and I scratched out a few smaller ones. We also got a few large mouth bass up to 5 lbs; 2/0 clousers with rattle beads were the ticket. Ventured east with a buddy for the only summer steelheading of the year for me and we got a couple, one 29” swinging a floating line/wet fly and one 32” swinging a bunny leech with a sink tip.

From Dan Colish: Hit the Deschutes in late November. It was a good day on euro. Easy to forget how close we are!

From Tanner Kennedy: Fished the Kilchis November 10 & 11th swinging for chum.  I’ve been fishing that river since the late 1980’s and I don’t think I have ever seen that many chum present before; also don’t know if I have ever seen that many drift boats on the river! Friday the 11th was crazy from Logger Bridge down, there were at least 50 boats on the river. On the 10th I was fishing with my son in his boat and we managed to also find some chinook and a beautiful specimen of a native coho.

Thanksgiving morning I took my Son to an OFC Stillwater and we landed some nice rainbows on tiny bugs under indicators. It was really good. We landed 26 fish and made it home in time for Turkey and a nap.  We decided to try again 2 days later and found several more using indicators and stripped fly tactics.

From Darryl Huff: Made multiple trips to the Warm Springs area in November. We caught quite a few nice trout in the 15-19″ range, primarily on egg patterns.

From Craig Kerschen: Catching a Chum Salmon was my bucket list. I was able to make it down to Tillamook Bay for the last day of that season…Nov 15th.

I had hunted Elk up both the Miami and Kilchis rivers so I was familiar with those rivers. It did not take long to find Chum near the 3 mile marker up the Miami. What a thrill! Got a beauty, my first Salmon on a fly rod.

From Chris Brehm: Spent a cold late November day on Diamond Lake. The Browns are gorgeous this time of year.

From Mike Shiiki: Had a great day in Warm Springs watching Darryl hog all the hogs, again! It was a great day. My son Nathaniel did well too with a 20+” Redside.

Also had a good day at OFC Big Tree Lake. The cabbage is starting to die down making it easier to get around.

From Dave Kilhefner: Rich Harvey, Dave Hopkins and I hit OFC Blue Den Lake a couple time. Both days were cold and the fishing was a little slow. We all managed some nice fish but Rich caught two exceptional trout measuring 34” and 31” on big white streamers.

Thanks to everyone for contributing thier reports. We already have some good ones rolling in for December as well.

Presidents Message December 2023

Hope everyone enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving and was able to get out and do some fishing with friends.

Fishing in November was pretty good as you’ll see when the the November fishing reports come out next week. Also, I’m feeling excited as once these rains roll thru and the water drops it will be game on for Winter Steelhead.

It’s time to think about paying your 2024 membership fee. However, if you joined as a new member in 2023 it will be good for 2024 too; we are on the honor system so please let me know. Here is the membership link plus I will be sending membership notices out to everyone. If you participate in the club I will guarantee you’ll get a solid value for the $35 you pay to be a member.

The “big 3” activities our club focuses on are meetings, fly tying and fish a longs.

I’m looking for input on the 2024 Fish A Longs schedule. With the warming trends and low steelhead returns, fishing opportunities are changing. Check out the 2024 fish a longs schedule and let me know if you’d like to see any changes; it’s not set in stone!

Last year we expanded Fish a longs to include camping. It’s not always easy as many campgrounds are booked up very early, especially state parks. But we did have some very successful camping/fishing outings, especially on the Deschutes, Metolius and Oregon Fishing Club.

December is shaping up to be decent fishing month. My crystal ball says the most dependable fishing will be at the Oregon Fishing Club ponds for trout, especially after this warming trend. The key to winter fishing is to be ready to fish when a weather window presents itself.

Several coastal streams like the Necanicum and Wilson get good early runs of steelhead. The Clackamas and Sandy get random shots of early winter steelhead too plus this year there are a good number of native, late running coho. Here’s a link to the PGE fish counts so you can see for yourself.

We don’t have a club Fish-A-Long in December but I’m open to helping folks with their spey casting and winter steelhead presentation basics. If you are interested in this email me and I’ll put you on the list.

For several years now we have been posting monthly fishing reports. Looking back on them is a good way to get ideas for local fly fishing opportunities currently happening or coming up. I’ve tested it out and it works! Type the word December or January in the search box and you’ll get all the past reports for that month.

Now is the perfect time for Christmas shopping plus don’t forget to get your wish list out so you get all the stocking stuffers you want. Please remember our sponsors, they are the lifeblood of the club. Stop by their shops and let them know your appreciate their support. Better yet buy something or book a trip.

November 2023 Fish A Long Report

This months Fish A Long was well attended and was about what we expected; colder than last month! Most of the spawning salmon had died but fish were still keying on egg patterns. Besides eggs, there was a decent Blue Wing Olive hatch in the afternoon and BWO nymphs accounted for a good amount of fish too.

The White River was blown out but the cold weather had it clearing up pretty fast, so it never got too bad where we were fishing.

Overall fishing was pretty good until a front moved thru on Saturday afternoon. Then the bite shut down and the wind filled the river up with leaves. Chris G came over on Sunday and reported the fishing was slow in the morning but good in the afternoon.

This was a great wrap up for our 2023 Fish A Longs with good food, good campfires and fun times had by all. Thanks to everyone that made this another fun Fish A Long weekend!
