The Kilchis River Fish-Along

Update: The trip is a go!  Justy just called (from the coast) and said the water is clear and the fish are in.  He hooked 12 fish today and got 6 to the bank.  It's raining, and will be tomorrow, but that should take some of the pressure off of the river.  Justy reported he caught the fish dead drifing a "green fly" (it's all I got...) and the word is that Lane will be sending some flies down with someone for everyone to share.

When: Saturday 12 Nov. 8: AM
Where: Kilchis River
Fish: Chum Salmon.
Directions: To get to the November Fish-A-Long on the Kilchis River take Hwy. 26 out of Portland. After passing North Plains take State Hwy 8 to the coastal town of Tillamook. Take a right onto Hwy 101 and head north. About 1 mile past the Cheese Factory take a right onto the Kilchis River Road. Head east approx. 3 miles, where everyone will meet at the logging bridge (there's a parking lot on the other side of the bridge). Allow approx. 2 1/2 hours travel time depending on driving conditions.

Breakfest/Lunch Provided: No.  Bring your own breakfest/lunch and drinks.

Gear Requirements:

Rod/Line: 7 to 10wt rod with a matching reel (hopefully with a good drag, you'll need it) with at least 50yds of backing.
Floating and sink-tip lines.

Leaders: 6 to 10ft. 2 to 0X. Chums aren't leader shy. They also have BIG teeth, hence their nick name "Dog Salmon."

Other: Waders and a wading staff

Flies: Chums can be caught on a variety of patterns depending on the water conditions. Two favorite colors are chartreuse and cerise but pink and black can also useful. Sizes should range from 2 to 8.
